Cali has worked across radio, television, and digital print, crafting stories that engage and inspire.
Dinner time growing up was always a raucous affair. Strongly held opinions on every topic were encouraged, albeit challenged. For Cali, this was when, and where, the seeds of journalistic attributes were planted.
However, Cali did not immediately pursue a career in journalism. She received her BA in Psychology from Wilfrid Laurier University with a minor in French. Toward the end of her third year she decided to finish her degree at Sehir University in Istanbul. She went on to work for the recruiting firm Exolys in Paris, where she interviewed over a hundred candidates in French in order to place successful candidates in sales roles at many of the world’s most well-known fashion retailers.
A fortuitous coffee with an old friend led to a sales and account management role for Starbucks Coffee Canada in their foodservice division. In this role, Cali met with customers all across BC to consult on their successful execution of the Starbucks brand portfolio. Starbucks would go on to sell their foodservice division to Nestle Canada. Cali worked for two more years with her wonderful team at Nestle, before leaving in August 2020.
Concurrent to her role at Starbucks then Nestle, Cali volunteered for The International Conference of Shopping Centers, organizing the Whistler Conference. Her main job was putting together the speakers list. For the 2020 Conference, Cali was instrumental in securing Aritzia’s Brian Hill as the Keynote Speaker. Also at the 2020 conference, Cali had the pleasure to meet Global News Anchor Jill Krop, who was moderating a debate. Her subsequent coffee with Krop rekindled a long dormant interest in pursuing Journalism.
Although, upon later reflection, Cali also has her sales role to thank for landing in journalism. While in her role for Starbucks and Nestle, Cali was often driving long distances. This allowed time to enjoy many podcasts and radio. While listening to This American Life, Revisionist History, The Big Story, and the Current and many others, she often found herself thinking how lucky the hosts were to get to do that job.
Cali has a passion for politics, social justice, climate change, women’s empowerment and all things backcountry sports-related. She has summited countless peaks in the Sea-to-sky corridor and beyond; hiking, and on skis. She has also had the good fortune to live and work in Paris and Istanbul, and explore over twenty countries around the world.
As with most things, she enthusiastically dove into her first year at BCIT, volunteering as student-teacher liaison - an important role during the pandemic when miscommunications abound.
She also works for BCIT’s student paper LINK Magazine as an editor, managing 5-10 contributors (depending on the month).
